WINNIPEG'S CULTURE & FAME

Winnipeg is the largest city and the capital of Manitoba, a province in Canada. It’s close to the longitudinal North American center and 110 kilometers from the United States border. This city is the confluence place for the Assiniboine and Red River. It is named after Lake Winnipeg and the origin of this name is from words that are derived from the Western Cree that mean “muddy water”.
Today, this city is among the most vibrant and popular cultural centers in the whole of Canada. That’s despite having a history of self-sufficiency and isolation. The people of this city are sincere and unpretentious. They are fun loving and adventurous. Although the city has cold and long winters, it has numerous outdoor activities that stimulate imagination while keeping dwellers warm.

Style
This thriving city still depicts the early indigenous architecture. Known as the Red River Frame, this architecture is depicted by houses that are built of horizontal and vertical logs. The early upper class houses and public buildings are built using limestone that portrays imported styles. However, the city was largely rebuilt following the disastrous 1950 Red River Flood. It changed steadily between the 1960s and 1970s. That was after the first shopping center appeared in 1959. In fact, almost the entire city’s landscape was overhauled at this time. The convention center, Centennial Center, and a new city hall including the concert hall, museum, and a planetarium were completed at around this time. Today, the style that characterizes the city is that of high-rise hotels, office buildings and banks that decorate its skyline.

Population
According to the 2016 Canadian Census, Winnipeg proper has 705,244 people. About 778,489 people live in the Winnipeg Census Metropolitan Area. This makes Winnipeg the largest city in Manitoba and the seventh largest city in Canada in terms of population.
